The Best of the West: 4-Day Motorcycle Tour Itinerary

Approx 1600km 

Day 1: Cairns to Chillagoe 

  • Morning: Depart Cairns with a group of 3-9 riders on Honda Transalps. 
  • Mid-Morning: Ride through the winding Gillies Range Road, experiencing its 263 turns and stunning rainforest scenery. 
  • Late Morning: Visit Lake Barrine, a natural volcanic crater lake, for a scenic stop with an early lunch. 
  • Afternoon: Explore the Curtain Fig Tree, a unique natural landmark, and continue through historic tin mining towns like Herberton, Watsonville, and Irvinebank. Stop at Australia’s only BYO Pub and if you’re lucky a chat to the legendary publican. 
  • Late Afternoon: Arrive in Chillagoe and visit the mineral smelters for a look at early 20th-century mineral smelting technology. 
  • Night: Check into Chillagoe Observatory and Eco Lodge for a comfortable overnight stay. Enjoy a well-deserved meal and cold beer and relax under the stars. For those who choose, you can also participate in a fun and educational night star gazing. With Chillagoes expansive clear, dark skies, you can wonder at the spectacle of the Milky Way with its multitudes of stars thru the telescope in a purpose-built dome (additional cost).  

Day 2: Chillagoe to Forsayth

  • Morning: Breakfast at the lodge followed by a guided 1-hour tour of Chillagoe Caves, exploring the fascinating limestone formations and nearby Balancing Rock.  Alternatively, if you’re a Ford enthusiast, speak to the guys about visiting the Ford Museum.
  • Late Morning:  Depart Chillagoe heading further west towards Tate and Lynd River and the mineral rich natural thermal waters of Talaroo Hot Springs.
  • Afternoon: Travelling thru Georgetown with its rich mining history and natural beauty keep your eyes peeled for gemstones.  Later we’ll arrive at Charleston Dam, anyone for a quick swim or try your luck catching a Barra?
  • Late Afternoon:  Arriving in Forsayth, established during the late 1800s gold rush,  we check into  The Goldfields Hotel where dinner tonight is in Finnagans Restaurant.

Day 3: Forsayth to Undara 

  • Morning: Today we head to Gilberton, then Kidston before getting to the Copperfield River Crossing.   
  • Afternoon: Arriving at Einasleigh’s Copperfield Gorge, keep a look out for rock pools and small waterfalls and the wildlife that come down to cool off.
  • Late Afternoon:  Travel towards Mt Surprise.
  • Evening: Arrive in Undara, one of the longest and best-preserved lava tube systems in the world. These tubes were formed approximately 190,000 years ago when lava flowed from the Undara volcanic vent, creating tunnels that extend for kilometers underground.  Accommodation  tonight at the Undara Lava Tubes. 

Day 4: Undara to Cairns 

  • Morning: Leaving Undara we head to the serene Valley of Lagoons.
  • Late Morning:  Reedy Brook – Saltern Lagoon and onto Mt Garnet.
  • Midday: Ravenshoe, Australia’s highest town where we’ll stop for lunch.
  • Afternoon: Riding into Innot Hot Springs, the chance to ease the weary saddle bones in the therapeutic thermal waters.
  • Late Afternoon: Arrive back in Cairns, concluding the tour with a sense of accomplishment and adventure and a cold beer of course. 

This itinerary is designed for motorcycle enthusiasts looking to explore the rugged landscapes and historical sites of Far North Queensland in a unique and adventurous way. The tour provides a blend of scenic riding, cultural insights, and comfortable accommodations, ensuring a memorable experience for all participants.

      Pre-ride Training

      You will need an Open Motorcycle Licence to ride our Honda Transalp 750 but we also have a LAMS option, the CRF300 Rally for L and P plates.

      All the trips will have both bitumen and dirt roads.  Travelling speed on the bitumen road can get up to 90-100km/hr in some areas and 70-80km/hr on dirt roads along the Savannah Way.  It may be useful to undertake some on and off-road riding before the trip.  If this is not possible and you would like to brush up on some skills or if you would like to gain some experience on the Transalp, we also offer Pre-ride Coaching/Training to increase your confidence and skills on the bike - $290 for a ½ Day.  Numbers are limited for this so book early.

      What you need

      Riding Gear

      Helmet, Gloves, Motorcycle Boots, Goggles, Jersey and/or Jacket, Nylons, Hydration Backpack - minimum 2L.

      Motorcycle Licence

      You will need an Open Motorcycle Licence to ride our Honda Transalp 750 but we also have a LAMS option, the CRF300 Rally for L and P plates.

      Personal Items

      Clothes and shoes for your overnight stays, Toiletries and Medication, Money (for souvenirs, entertainment, alcoholic beverages)

      Travel Insurance and Personal Insurance

      We highly recommend travel insurance that covers motorcycle tours, to cover any costs incurred if you may need to cancel due to injury, illness or medication condition, or to cover any personal illness or injury suffered before or during the tour.

      Motorcycle Hire Security Deposit

      The renter of the motorcycle is responsible for ALL damages to the bike that they are riding.

      Savannah Motorcycle Tours bikes have third party CTP insurance and single seat registration.

      All riders are required to lodge a security deposit of $2,000 on top of the tour payment.  This is to cover any damage to the motorcycle ridden by the rider.  The rider is liable for ALL damages to the bike.  This money is refundable upon the safe return of the motorcycle.  If damages amount to less than your security deposit than the difference between the repair costs and the deposit will be refunded.  If damages are over the $2,000 the rider will be liable to pay the additional costs.  The security deposit is processed to the rider’s credit card (Visa/Mastercard) prior to the commencement of the tour.

      All riders must have a current, valid and appropriate licence for the motorcycle.  Riders must abide by local traffic laws and regulations (including drug and alcohol limits).

      Tour Booking Payment and Cancellation Policy

      A 20% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your spot, so please take out travel insurance when making this booking.  This deposit secures your place on the tour, but does not lock in your price if there is a tour price change.  Final payment is required 45 days before the tour starts.

      Cancelling after the final payment has been received:

      • More than 21 days prior to departure date – 75% of the remaining amount is refunded.
      • Between 21 and 14 days prior to departure – 50% of the remaining amount is refunded
      • Between 14 days and departure date – No refund

      We highly recommend that all riders purchase Travel Insurance and Personal Insurance that covers motorcycle tours.

      All credit card payments will incur a 2% fee which will be added at the payment stage.

      Terms and Conditions

      The following terms and conditions form a legally binding contract between you, the rider, and Savannah Motorcycle Tours Pty Ltd.  Please ensure that you read the following carefully before committing to a booking.

      A 20% non-refundable deposit is required when booking, so please take out travel insurance as soon as this initial payment is made.  The deposit guarantees you a place on the tour, but does not lock in your price if there is a tour price change.

      We highly recommend travel insurance that covers motorcycle tours, to cover any costs incurred if you may need to cancel due to injury, illness or medical condition, or to cover any personal illness or injury suffered before or during the tour.

      Savannah Motorcycle Tours include Public Liability Insurance, we recommend that all participants purchase their own Personal Insurance to cover rider injury.

      If a participant fails to join a tour or leaves prior to completion, no refunds can be made.  No refunds will be made for any part of the tour that is not used or undertaken.

      In the event of a mechanical breakdown not caused by rider negligence, Savannah Motorcycle Tours will make every attempt to repair or provide a replacement motorcycle to continue your tour.

      All riders must have a current, valid and appropriate licence for the motorcycle.

      We require prior to partaking in the tour:

      • A copy of the rider’s current motorcycle licence
      • Terms and Conditions must be read and accepted (with a signature)
      • Release and Waiver, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement signed in person before beginning the tour.

      Our guides and support crew are First Aid trained and carry a First Aid pack, mobile phones, radios, and GPS locator in the event of an emergency.

      By booking a tour with Savannah Motorcycle Tours the rider automatically agrees to the following:

      I am completely aware that riding a motorcycle is dangerous and that I, the rider am exposed to certain risks.

      I may be injured physically, mentally or worse.

      I am aware of the dangers of riding a motorcycle on and off road.

      I partake in this trip at my own risk and I understand that I, the rider, my successors, executors and administrators will release, indemnify and not instigate any claim, demand or expense against Savannah Motorcycle Tours nor their representatives, for any personal injury, loss of life or damage to personal property suffered during or subsequent to events on the tour.

      I agree to the fact that neither Savannah Motorcycle Tours nor their representatives are responsible for any damage to my person, belongings, or any financial loss incurred or for any other extenuating circumstances beyond their control.

      I acknowledge that travel insurance to cover all forms of personal injury, repatriation or costs in the event of death is essential and I am responsible to ensure that I have appropriate cover.

      I agree to wear appropriate motorcycle safety equipment at all times and that I am medically fit to participate in a motorcycle tour.

      I am aware that Savannah Motorcycle Tours is not responsible for the behaviour of other participants.

      I will abide by local traffic laws and regulations (including drug and alcohol limits) and those of the trip.

      I understand that any road whether on or off-road, or any other venue upon which you travel may have muddy, sandy or rocky surfaces with defects either hidden or exposed.

      I agree to obey and observe all rules and directions given during a tour, either in writing or verbally by Savannah Motorcycle Tours.

      Savannah Motorcycle Tours has the right to exclude me from any tour for non-compliance to any rule or direction.

      I acknowledge that I have an obligation to myself and to others to act safely, and within the law and with due care and regard for other people and property.

      Savannah Motorcycle Tours reserves the right to change part or all of the tour arrangements advertised due to circumstances beyond our control.  We cannot be held responsible for any disruptions, delays or cancellations in situations that we cannot control.  We will endeavour to provide alternatives that are comparable with the original itinerary.  If you choose to cancel your booking Savannah Motorcycle Tours cancellation policy terms apply.

      By signing this form, I agree that I have read and understand the terms and conditions of the tour and I agree that my participation in this guided tour is entirely at my own risk.
